About Karachi Port Trust
KPT is the acronym of Karachi Port Trust, which is a Federal Government owned agency, working under the Ports and Shipping Secretary of Pakistani Government. It is the responsibility of the Maritime Secretary of Pakistan to look after the operations of Port of Karachi, located in Karachi, Sindh. Karachi was known as the gateway of Asia because of its prime location in the Arabian Sea and the port was established between the years 1880 and 1887, under Act IV of 1886. The Karachi Port is run by a Board of Trustees, which include a Chairperson, appointed by the Federal Government and 10 trustees. At the time of independence of Pakistan in 1947, the capacity of the port for the dry cargo was 1.5 million tons and for P.O.L. products it was about 1.0million tons per annum. Nowadays Karachi port has the capacity for the liquid cargo about 11.74 million tons and for the dry cargo about 25.45 million tons.
